The Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act of 1959 (LMRDA), 29 U.S.C. §§ 401 et seq., imposes on unions a variety of duties aimed at keeping the election of officers and the operation of the organizations free of political taint and corruption. Known as the union member’s bill of rights, the LMRDA requires union leaders to disclose budgetary and other information about their organization’s operation and to hold open meetings to conduct business. 29 U.S.C. §§ 411(a) and 431(c).
