I. (§12.1) Introduction

The problems surrounding child abuse—whether physical, sexual, or emotional—and neglect pose significant difficulties in otherwise intact families. But these difficulties may increase substantially when dealing with broken families. In those families, the focus on the abuse or neglect intensifies because of the impact of these problems on domestic proceedings, especially with respect to visitation and custody rights. In some cases, individuals also fabricate allegations of abuse and neglect to improve their respective positions in the domestic matter.
