To continue coverage, the qualified beneficiaries must pay the
plan’s applicable premium. The term “applicable premium” means
the cost to the plan for the period of coverage for similarly situated beneficiaries for whom a qualifying event has not occurred, without regard to whether the cost is paid by the employer or the employee. 29 U.S.C. § 1164(1).
