J. (§10.14) Support

Impeachment requires support, or “foundation.” There must be a connection between the impeaching questions and the issues in the case. Thus, a plaintiff’s lawyer was properly forbidden from cross-examining a physician to elicit testimony about that physician’s own standard of care. “The requisite standard of care is that degree of skill and learning ordinarily exercised under the same or similar circumstances by members of the profession.” Vititoe v.
