F. (§10.10) Contradiction
Impeaching evidence is distinct from evidence that contradicts. See Talley v. Richart, 185 S.W.2d 23, 26 (Mo. 1945) (“The terms are not synonymous.”); see also Maugh v. Chrysler Corp., 818 S.W.2d 658, 660–61 (Mo. App. W.D. 1991). Impeachment is directed to the credibility of the witness for the purpose of discrediting the witness, whereas contradiction is a direct attack on the accuracy of a witness’s testimony through the use of factual evidence to contradict the testimony.
