OAS SECRETARY GENERAL Jose Miguel Insulza received the Charles T. Manatt Democracy Award from the International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES), in recognition of his leadership and vision in strengthening democracy in the Americas.

The award, named after a former US Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, honors individuals who work to build organizations and strengthen networks committed to democracy and freedom. Insulza shared the award with former US Congressman Lee H. Hamilton, who now heads the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

In accepting the award at a ceremony marking the twentieth anniversary of IFES, Insulza noted that since he became Secretary General in 2005, the OAS has observed more than 30 electoral processes in the countries of the region.
