THE COUNCIL of the Americas honored OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza with its 2007 Chairman's Award for Leadership in the Americas, in recognition of his efforts to advance democracy, peace, justice, and development in the region. The organization, which promotes free trade, democracy, and the rule of law in the hemisphere, presented Insulza with the award during a ceremony at the United States Department of State.

Insulza also received honorary doctorate degrees recently from two academic institutions: the University of South Florida (USF) and the Arts, Sciences, and Communications University of Chile (UNIACC).

On May 5, the Secretary General was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Law degree from the University of South Florida for his commitment to Latin America and the Caribbean and his leadership in the region. Speaking to a crowd of over 10,000 attending the graduation ceremony in Tampa, Insulza said the policies of cooperation and mutual understanding between societies in the Americas are more necessary and urgent than ever...
