It was only natural that Scott Binder, senior vice president of Comcast Colorado, would nab the title of 2007 Fittest CEO in the World by winning the CEO Ironman Challenge World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, last fall. Adventure runs in the family.

Among Binder's favorite family adventures is the Christmas his mother gave him a videotape, instructing his family not to play it until Christmas Eve.

"When we played it, there was my mother preparing for, and then, skydiving--at 83 years old. She's been an inspiration to me," says Binder of his 90-year-old mother who lives in Denver.

Binder grew up in Fort Morgan, where his parents owned a greenhouse and nursery. Late into his 60s, his father would climb high atop the greenhouse to fix glass panes--an image that would forever remind Binder "that you can be as young as you want to be."

A self-described "frustrated athlete," Binder tried playing baseball at the University of Nebraska before developing his interest in triathlons, which would lead him to Ironman competitions in Hawaii in 1985, 1989 and 1999.

"There's a strong correlation between effort and reward when you're training for triathlons," said Binder, 46, who in 1989 was featured on "ABC's Wide World of Sports." "The story was more about my mom, who had survived cancer and rode her bike while I would run. That created a lot of excitement in Fort Morgan when (TV host) Chris Fowler came to town."

An accounting major, Binder worked for Arthur Andersen in downtown Denver before being lured to Denver's growing cable industry. Over 20 years, Binder would manage cable systems across the country, happily returning to Colorado where today he heads Comcast, which employs 2,500 and serves more...
