IADC member Ken Scott, along with his partner, Bruce Reynolds, both of Borden & Elliot in Toronto, have authored this looseleaf, supplemented, single-volume treatise covering Canadian construction surety law. Making a significant contribution to the work is another IADC member, Claude Baillargeon of Lavery, de Billy of Montreal, with his commentary on Quebec law on each aspect of the work.

Divided into 15 chaptes, the treatise, except for the introductory and final chapters, addresses specific issues of suretyship, focusing on surety bonds and surety relationships in the construction industry.

The stated purposes of the work are to assist practitioners, underwriters, claims adjusters, consultants and contractors, as well as to be a scholarly resource. These purpose certainly are well carried out in the execution.

In the chapter on the underwriting process, the authors give practical background information helpful to surety people, as well as to contractors. The chapter on the investigation and adjusting of surety claim, provides step-by-step procedures especially helpful to surety claims people and to surety practitioners in the Canada and the United States.

Also of interest to lawyers on both sides of the border is the chapter on indemnity agreements, which gives useful suggestions on how to obtain indemnity agreements so as to assure their binding effect on spouses, partnerships and individual partners.
