Scope: The Agriculture Department’s National Institute
of Food and Agriculture seeks applications for the
Integrated Research, Education, and Extension
Competitive Grants Program—Organic Transitions
announcement to support the development and
implementation of research, extension, and higher
education programs to improve the competitiveness of
organic livestock and crop producers, as well as those
who are adopting organic practices.
Deadline: March 15, 2021.
Funds: $6.65 million total for awards of up to $500,000.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities.
Areas: USDA said priorities include but are not limited
to: documenting and understanding the effects of
organic practices on soil health and fertility; greenhouse
gas mitigation; enhanced biodiversity; understanding
the dynamics of weeds, pests and diseases for better
management; developing improved technologies,
methods, models, and metrics to document, describe,
and optimize the ecosystem services and the climate
variability adaptation and mitigation ability of organic
crop, livestock, and integrated crop-livestock production
systems; and developing cultural practices and other
allowable alternatives to substances recommended for
removal on the National Organic Program’s National List
of Allowed and Prohibited Substances.

New Beginning for Tribal Students Programs
(USDA)
Scope: The Agriculture Department’s National Institute
of Food and Agriculture seeks applications for the
New Beginning for Tribal Students Programs (NBTS)
announcement to increase the retention and graduation
rate of Tribal students attending 1994, 1862, and 1890
land-grant universities.
Deadline: March 15, 2021.
Funds: $5 million total for awards ranging from
$100,000 to $500,000.
Eligibility: Land-grant colleges and universities
including 1862, 1890, and 1994 land-grant institutions.
Areas: USDA said funding will support Tr ibal students
through but not limited to: recruiting; tuition and related
fees; experiential learning; student services, including
tutoring; counseling; academic advising; and other
student services that would increase the retention and
graduation rate of Tribal students enrolled at land-grant
colleges or universities.

Scientic Cooperation Research Program (USDA)
Scope: The Agriculture Department’s Foreign
Agricultural Service (FAS) seeks applications for the
Scientic Cooperation Research Program (SCRP) to
support FAS’s Borlaug Fellowship Program and other
strategic goals and utilize the scientic communities’
accumulated knowledge and technologies to help aid
in developing practical solutions to address issues
including agricultural trade and market access, animal
and plant health, biotechnology, food safety and
security, and sustainable natural resource management.
Deadline: March 1, 2021.
Funds: $50,000 for up to 10 awards.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities.
Areas: USDA said SCRP will support applied research,
extension, and education projects that create practical
solutions to challenges faced by small farmers and build
regional or global trade capacities in FAS countries. In
general, applications should support one or more of
the following strategies of the Global Food Security Act:
accelerate inclusive, agriculture-led economic growth
that reduces global poverty, hunger and malnutrition,
particularly among women and children; increase the
productivity, incomes, and livelihoods of small-scale
producers, especially women, by working across
agricultural value chains, enhancing local capacity to
manage agricultural resources effectively and expanding
producer access to local and international markets;
and build resilience to food shocks among vulnerable
populations and households while reducing reliance
upon emergency food assistance.
