By a 5-4 margin, the Supreme Court rejected plans by two public school districts in Louisville, Ky., and Seattle, Wash., to take into account students' race when deciding where youngsters will attend class. According to Kevin Brown, professor of law at Indiana University, Bloomington, the Supreme Court's opinion in the two cases is likely to roll back efforts by many public school districts to increase the racial and ethnic diversity of their institutions.
