Colin Powell wannabes are flooding foreign exchange programs. More U.S. high school students now view studying abroad as a way to make a difference in the world as sort of an unofficial Secretary of State.

"Prior to September 11, the motivation was a desire to have an adventure," says Christine Vogel of AFS Intercultural Programs, which has sent 1,800 students abroad this school year. "Now we see much more determination to be an ambassador for the U.S. and to really come to understand another culture."
