United Way

WE WISH IT WEREN'T TRUE. But as wonderful as Salt Lake City is, it's not immune to the same problems of other cities its size. Every year it faces escalating social problems such as teen pregnancy, gangs, domestic violence, drug abuse, illiteracy, homelessness and crime.

Most of us think these issues will touch only isolated pockets of Salt Lake's inner city neighborhoods. Most of us are wrong.

Social problems tend to last for generations. Research shows that children of high school dropouts tend to become dropouts themselves. Children of teen parents become teen parents. Children of convicted criminals are much more likely to spend their own lives behind bars. On and on it goes, forming a costly cycle of tragic dependency.

Wouldn't it be great if each of us could do something about it? What if we could prevent crisis from destroying families and causing permanent dependence on social welfare?

Community Solutions [R] from United Way does just that. Community Solutions [R] consists of six local teams, made up of 50 Salt Lake-area nonprofits funded by United Way. The teams work together to wrap services around families and individuals who are at risk of falling through the cracks. And as a result, each year Community Solutions [R] helps thousands of Salt Lake people lead more productive, self-sufficient lives.

That's good for families and it's good for Salt Lake business. Research shows that every dollar invested in prevention saves society $6 later in remedial education, court, prison, and social welfare expenses.

Supporting Community Solutions [R] from United Way is a smart way to help your community. And when you do, 97 percent of every dollar you invest in United Way goes directly to Community Solutions [R] programs, thanks to generous corporate supporters.

Now in a new century, a new millennium, one might wonder if The Salvation Army will survive. Do our uniforms, bands and red kettles make us a relic that no longer has value in today's changing world? It's precisely because the world is...
