From 2001 through Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's resignation in 2006, the national news media seemed to hang on his every opinion, even when they did not much like his views. The publication of the paperback version of the secretary's memoir, Known and Unknown, whose proceeds support more than a dozen military charities, served as the occasion for Newsmax to publish an article, accompanied by a lengthy video interview, setting forth his wide ranging views on events since his 2006 resignation.

The former secretary strongly questioned the assumption that regimes like Iran's (or North Korea's) can be convinced voluntarily to abandon and put under UN inspection nuclear programs that the rulers believe secure their perpetuation in power. Nor does he believe that Russia or China will pressure them to do so.

On the likelihood of a U.S. attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, Rumsfeld refused to offer an opinion, but he hoped that the U.S. would support Israel's leaders should they decide to respond militarily to year's of Iranian threats to destroy Israel.
