As for growth, the recreational vehicle industry continues to be strong in the region.

The newest is Open Range RV Co. in Shipshewana, a local startup that opened in October in a 120,000-square-foot plant and will have 75 on the payroll by year's end, with 150 by year-end 2008, says Gary Zehr, economic development director/consultant for LaGrange County government.

Two in the county also expanded, he says. Forest River RV Co., which employs about 200 in Topeka, "is growing every year," and Crossroads RV in Topeka also added on and currently employs about 400.
