Rule 409 Payment of Medical and Similar Expenses

Evidence of furnishing or offering or promising to pay medical, hospital or similar expenses occasioned by an injury is not admissible to prove liability for the injury.

The rationale for this rule, like Rules 407 and 408, is that payment of medical expenses may be due to humanitarian impulses rather than an admission of liability, and that to admit evidence of payment or an offer of payment to prove liability would discourage assistance to the injured person.
