Colombian President Alvaro Uribe began his second term amid renewed calls for an end to nearly a half-century of violence. Uribe walks a thin line between offering a conciliatory hand or an iron fist. The Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), the country's largest guerrilla group, seems ready to negotiate. Yet many Colombians would prefer that the government take a tougher stance.
