Emma Swain, CPA and CEO of St. Supery Vineyards and Winery in Napa, has been growing her knowledge of wine during the last 18 years in the industry. And what better topic to discuss with the holidays around the corner? So California CPA bottled some of Swain's knowledge about the almighty grape. (We managed to ask some non-libation-related questions as well.)

Any advice for new wine enthusiasts?

If you live near a wine-producing region, visit local wineries. Many are run by people who are knowledgeable, excited about wine and love to share their knowledge. Alternatively, ask a local wine merchant if they have tastings, classes or special events you can attend. Don't be shy about asking questions. Over time, the information you learn will connect into a framework you can build on for each new experience.

I found early on that nothing beats lasting wine blind with others. This is a great way to determine which varictals or brands you really like. Sitting quietly, smelling, tasting and then discussing the wines will help you develop your own vocabulary of what you like in a wine. Host a tasting and have everyone bring a bottle of the same varietal in a similar price point. It's a lot of fun and a great way to try lots of wines with friends.

What was harder for you: the CPA Exam or a half-marathon?

Both require long-term dedication to improving your performance to obtain a specific goal. The difference is that running is always about beating your last time; I'm glad I do not have to take the CPA Exam over and over, trying for a higher score each time!

How does having a CPA license help you navigate your duties as a CEO?

Everyone has strengths, which they rely on as they move forward in a career. My CPA license and my work experiences as a CPA made me very strong in the financial aspects of business. As a CFO I was exposed to every area of the business, so you get to see how the whole process works together and see ways to improve it.

What are some notable changes you've seen to the wine industry over the years?

Consolidation of distributors, wineries and retailers has been prevalent throughout. When I started in the business there were approximately 20 good distributors in California now there are effectively two.
