The Defense Department now is employing robots as security guards. A case in point is the Mobile Detection Assessment Response System.

Developed by General Dynamics Robotic Systems, of Westminister, Md., MDARS has obstacle avoidance 360-degree sensors capable of detecting intruders at 150 meters.

It also can detect breached security locks.

MDARS weighs more than 2,900 pounds, has a 42-hp diesel engine and can travel up at 20 miles per hour. It runs for 12 hours without refueling.
