Augie Hiebert

Pioneer broadcaster Augie Hiebert was named Alaskan of the Year for 2001 by the nonprofit committee behind the award and its statewide board of directors. Hiebert was recognized for bringing TV and FM radio to Alaska in the early 1950s. Hiebert founded Alaska's first TV stations, KTVA in Anchorage and KTVF in Fairbanks. Rural communities were brought into the television age when Hiebert pioneered use of TV translators to project signals to remote areas. Today Hiebert heads Mini-Radio Service, whose effort it is to locate a low-power radio station in every remote Alaska village capable of notification of tsunamis, flooding or other life-threatening conditions.

Department of Labor

Gov. Tony Knowles appointed Rebecca Nance Gamez as the new commissioner for the Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Gamez was appointed director of the Employment Security Division in January 1995. Prior to that, she worked for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the Alaska and Oregon state legislatures and as a business manager for a restaurant corporation in Washington, D.C.

Alaska Native Heritage Center

Frieda Costley recently joined the Alaska Native Heritage Center as a grant writer and coordinator. She previously was administrator for the Emmonak Tribal Council in the village of Emmonak and was responsible for operations and the fiscal health of the organization. Prior to that she was acting city manager and city clerk.

National Bank of Alaska

Claire Bradley Chan, business banker for National Bank of Alaska's commercial loan department in Anchorage, was reinstated to vice president. Chan began her career with the bank in 1987 and became vice president in 1988 before leaving to pursue other opportunities in 1990. Cindy Jobe, business banker in NBA's residential construction department, was named vice president. Jobe joined NBA in June 2000, bringing with her 15 years of prior real estate lending experience. John Gleason, manager at the Barrow store, was named assistant vice president. Gleason began his career with NBA as a financial ser ices representative at the Eagle River store in 1991. Kevin Miller, a business banker at the Homer store, was named assistant vice president. Miller entered NBA's management training program in 1997 and was promoted to personal banker at the Homer store the following year.
