Resnick, of SF fame, writes with wit and intelligence about a 16-year-old boy named Mario from the future (2523 AD) traveling back in time to meet Leonardo da Vinci as he is in the midst of painting Lady with an Ermine. Mario's pet, an ermine-like creature from another planet, has escaped through time too, and da Vinci is quite taken by the strange little animal. It is this pet who becomes the "ermine" in da Vinci's portrait, cleverly disguised by the master. Since da Vinci's restless mind is endlessly curious, meeting someone from the far future doesn't frighten him--instead he is fascinated by anything Mario can tell him. Resnick weaves in all kinds of encounters: with Machiavelli, for instance. At one point, Mario asks Leonardo if he is interested in codes, or secret...
