Resisting Progress.

I read with disbelief the letter from Pa-tism66 (December/January issue), and the kindest thing I can say about it is that the writer is naive and historically ignorant. The conservative factions in the United States resist every form of social progress. But once the progress occurs, it becomes accepted as mainstream by subsequent generations. More specifically, the GOP fought Social Security, the minimum wage, racial equality, Medicare, unemployment insurance, the forty-hour week, environmental protection, among many other issues.

One would hope that reactionaries...
