Grants alert (cont.)
Eligibility: Colleges and universities and nonprot
organizations.
Areas: NSF said projects may develop new
computational, mathematical or experimental tools, and
models, to: explain function and interactions in natural,
experimental and model microbiomes; elucidate the
chemical and molecular mechanisms that underlie
communication between the host and the microbiome
and among the members of the microbiome; and/or
comparatively analyze characteristics of microbiomes
to discover emergent properties that provide insight into
the behavior of living systems.

National Science Foundation Research
Traineeship Program (NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation seeks
applications for the National Science Foundation
Research Traineeship Program announcement to explore
ways for graduate students in research-based master’s
and doctoral degree programs to develop the skills,
knowledge and competencies needed to pursue a range
of science, technology, engineering and math careers.
Deadline: Feb. 25, 2021.
Funds: $55 million for up to 20 awards ranging from $2
million to $3 million.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities.
Areas: NSF said funding supports projects addressing
workforce development, emphasizing broad participation,
and addressing institutional capacity-building needs in
graduate education. The program encourages strategic
collaborations with the private sector, nongovernmental
organizations, government agencies, national
laboratories, eld stations, teaching and learning centers,
informal science centers and academic partners.

Proposed Cooperative Institute for Pacic
Islands Region (DOC)
Scope: The Commerce Department’s National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) seeks
applications for the Proposed Cooperative Institute for
Pacic Islands Region, a NOAA-supported, nonfederal
organization that has established an outstanding
research program in one or more areas that are relevant
to the NOAA mission “to understand and predict
changes in climate, weather, oceans, and coasts, to
share that knowledge and information with others,
and to conserve and manage coastal and marine
ecosystems and resources.
Deadline: Jan. 22, 2021.
Funds: $42 million total for one award.
Eligibility: Nonfederal public and private nonprot
universities, colleges and research institutions that offer
accredited graduate-level degree-granting programs in
NOAA-related sciences.
Areas: USDA said the purpose of this long-term
collaborative partnership is to promote research,
education, training and outreach aligned with NOAA’s
mission; to obtain research capabilities that do not exist
internally; and/or to expand research capacity in NOAA-
related sciences to: conduct collaborative, long-term
research that involves NOAA scientists and those at
the research institution(s) from one or more scientic
disciplines of interest to NOAA; utilize the scientic,
education and outreach expertise at the research
institution(s) that, depending on NOAA’s research needs,
may or may not be located near a NOAA facility; support
student participation in NOAA-related research studies;
and strengthen or expand NOAA-related research
capabilities and capacity at the research institution(s)
that complements and contributes to NOAA’s ability to
reach its mission goals.
