We are, after all, in the 21st century and we have something called the Internet --another tool you should use. For example, if you post a picture or description of a gun on a forum (such as www.smithwessonforum.com, www.coltforum.com or www.rugerforum.com) you'll find collectors very much up-to-date on them. They'll be more than happy to tell you what these old guns are worth. Some even have sub-forums where you can register to offer the guns for sale to certain forum members--a pre-selected "seller's market" of sorts.

Do a search on GunBroker.com and see what the prices are on a gun like the one you just bought or took in a trade. Obviously, what the seller is asking is not nearly as relevant as what the last one, in the same condition, actually sold for! If you gave the seller what he wanted for the gun, then it was a fair trade.
