$6.4M for hydrogen
fuels projects announced
The Energy Department’s (DOE’s) Ofce of Fossil
Energy recently released a funding opportunity
announcement for the University Turbine Systems
Research (UTSR) Program focusing on hydrogen
fuels. Successful applications will address and
resolve fundamental scientic challenges and
applied engineering technology issues associated
with advancing the performance and efciency of
combustion turbines fueled with pure hydrogen,
hydrogen and natural gas mixtures, and other
carbon-free hydrogen-containing fuels in combined-
and simple-cycle applications, DOE said.
According to the solicitation, DOE seeks research
in the following three areas of interest (AOIs):
• AOI 1—Hydrogen Combustion Fundamentals
for Gas Turbines aims to further the technical
understanding of fundamental combustion phenom-
ena of hydrogen-containing fuels over a broad range
of fuel compositions and combustion conditions.
• AOI 2—Hydrogen Combustion Applications
for Gas Turbines seeks to develop a technical
understanding of applied hydrogen containing fuel
combustion phenomena under gas turbine condi-
tions.
• AOI 3—Hydrogen-Air Rotating Detonation
Engines (RDEs) has two main focus areas related
to RDE combustion and ultimate integration with
turbomachinery for the purpose of terrestrial-based
power generation while operating on a broad range
of hydrogen-based fuels to include pure hydrogen
and hydrogen/natural gas mixtures in air.
Total funding for the solicitation is $6.4 million
for up to eight awards for projects of up to 36
months in duration. A 20 percent match is required.
Eligible entities include colleges and universities
and university-afliated research institutions.
DOE said the UTSR Program encompasses a
portfolio of gas turbine–focused university projects,
which address a wide variety of technical topics by
conducting cutting-edge research and development.
