A recent National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) that states should take an enterprise-wide to preserving electronic records.

The report says states continue to struggle to meet the challenges posed by the amount of official communications in digital format. State CIOs, along with archivists, record managers, and the state attorneys general, should all play a role in determining how a state should maintain its e-records, the study says.

The report also says that many states have approached e-records management on a "piecemeal basis," which makes establishing a comprehensive statewide IT governance structure critical.
