Only 15% of all data currently stored and processed by organizations worldwide is classified as business-critical, while the majority of data is considered either dark--of unknown value--or redundant, obsolete, or trivial (ROT), according to an independent, global report from Veritas Technologies. And this data could cost organizations up to $4.6 trillion cumulatively by 2020.

The "Global Databerg Report" reveals that 52% of all information currently being stored and processed by organizations around the world is considered dark, and another 33% is considered useless ROT.

The report reveals that organizations are creating and storing data at an ever-increasing rate due to a "data-hoarding" culture and an indifferent attitude toward retention rules. For the average mid-sized organization storing 1,000TB of data, the cost to store its non-critical information is estimated at almost $700,000 annually.

The Veritas report, which offers insights from more than 2,500 IT professionals in 22 countries, also found that:
