Remembering Joe Feller.

Once you met Joe Feller it was hard to forget him. He had a zest for life that few people can match. Those of us who knew Joe probably remember him as I do for his integrity, his incisive mind, his commitment to environmental issues, his generous spirit, and perhaps most of all, his love of the outdoors.

I recall with great fondness a visit from Joe when I was teaching at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. We spent an exhausting several days cross country skiing in the mountains outside of town. I think that Joe loved Nordic skiing even more than he loved running, but boy did he love running. Joe and I ran a lot together--usually early in the morning at first light--during a three year stint that he spent in Boulder. In the winter, it could be brutally cold and windy but still we would run. I could be miserable, but Joe never seemed to mind. He loved the outdoors like no one I have ever met.

Joe brought his passion for the outdoors to his work. He was a tenacious and gifted lawyer, well known throughout the country for his success at keeping livestock out of places they didn't belong. Joe's incisive mind was also on...
