"The Last Wars We Won," by Patti Glastris, is the best piece in your excellent June 2007 issue. As a retired AF 0-6 who finished up a thirty-year career teaching strategy at the National War College, I find the analysis in this piece superb. The Bosnian and Serbian war is the benchmark, and the current war in Iraq is the anomaly. The Bosnian/Serbian conflict was a multilateral approach combining the art of diplomacy and the art of war. We were able to set the conditions for regime change, but it was the Serbs who got rid of their dictator. What a great story--and we buried it as a people.

The best hope for the Democrats is to make that story a centerpiece of why this nation fights, and how it fights. I hope your piece is just...
