PositionStatewide - Statistical data

North Carolina's estimated median family income has lagged behind the United States' for years. The gap narrowed between 1990 and 2000, but while the state median grew 20% in the last decade it did not keep pace with the national growth rate of 28.3%. Consequently, the difference between the state and country more than doubled--from $3,300 in 1990 to $6,800 in 2010--due to North Carolina's reliance on manufacturing and construction, industries that haven't completely rebounded from the recession, says UNC Charlotte economics professor Ron Madsen.
