New recruits: fill your firm with help from those in the know.

PositionHow-To GUIDE

The job market in Utah has experienced low unemployment rates for many years, for both part-time and full-time positions. This makes it extremely hard for employers to find an adequate number of employees to fill vacant jobs.

In order to fill certain positions, reactive services, such as classified advertising, are a perfectly acceptable and even preferred way for employers to find employees. However, a company looking to fill a $160,000-per-year job, or any position requiring a unique set of skills, probably will not be able to find a qualified employee through the classified ads.

To find candidates to hire for key positions within a company, many businesses are turning to recruiting firms. These recruiting or staffing service firms proactively search the market for a suitable candidate for a specific job. According to the American Staffing Association, 80 percent of staffing service firm clients say staffing firms provide a good way to find people who can become permanent employees. Companies have hired all levels of employees, from mechanics to CEOs, by using staffing service firms. Finding the right employee through a staffing service usually means matching the type of positions and salary range with the appropriate staffing firm.

Staffing firms often specialize in the recruiting of various types of employees. While some firms strictly handle temporary and temporary-to-hire workers, other firms specialize in the recruitment and direct hire placement of top management professionals.

Once a company decides what type of employee and qualifications are needed for a particular position, the employer can compare two or three staffing service firms that potentially fit their needs. Important things for employers to consider when selecting a staffing firm include: specialization and experience in your area of need, defined recruiting plans, qualification standards and processes, screening and testing capabilities, and reputation in the local community.
