DISTURBED BY RUNDLES

Your recent editorial (March, "Ethics in Business? Hal") disturbed me personally. I realized that it was because you put all of us in the same category. Generalizations are unworthy of you or anyone when addressing such a large and diverse group. If to be successful in business I had to be Immoral, illegal or "unethical," I would not consider myself sucessful nor would most of my peers. It isn't an issue of getting caught or not. And you don't need to define ethics for us. If it doesn't feel right, It probably isn't. You trivialize the whole issue with your last paragraph. On the other hand, at least you know I read the editorial.

IN FAVOR

I loved your recent article on business ethics, or the lack of.

I am in complete agreement with you, I find that the most difficult thing in running a business today is the complete lack of any ethics, It seems that many people today can do what ever it takes to make a buck, then chalk It up to "well, its only business." I guess in their mind It lets them off the hook. This statement allows them to lie, cheat, manipulate, steal, or anything else they need to do to get ahead or make a dollar. Many days I wonder how this change has happened, then I realize nothing has changed, I'm just more aware of it today. Thank you for your insight.

However, based on your choice of words to describe Attorney General John Ashcroft (February, Robert Schwab, "Phantom Fears") I have a good idea.

Crazy is defined as "unbalanced; mentally insane." By asking your question, I assume this is what you meant to ask the readership of your magazine. Did you look up the definition of "crazy" before deciding if this is what you intended to convey? Based on the two examples you gave of Mr. Ashcroft's behavior, I doubt it.

I value all my freedoms and can be considered one of the "peace loving people" who feel the federal government is way too involved in our daily lives both in the form of laws and of social programs of all...
