Upon joining Raleigh-based Red Hat in 2001, Paul Cormier was a key force behind the company's dramatic shift from a retail orientation to selling open-source software products to larger businesses. In his first year at Red Hat, he promised company leadership that he would leave the company if the change didn't produce at least 8,000 new subscriptions within 90 days, according to the ZDNet website. The company sold 32,000.

So it was natural that Cormier got tapped to lead the company last month when CEO Jim Whitehurst was promoted to president of Red Hat's owner, IBM.
