The list of mainly, but not exclusively, academic publications compiled in this volume covers items issued in the decade between 1980 and 1990. The list does not pretend to be exhaustive, "as it merely reflects what I have been able to acquire at various locations in China and Tibet" (compiler's note). The Provisional List (pp. 1-86) comprises two sections. Section I (pp. 1-34) deals with historical, cultural, medical, and religious studies and research papers. The title of the slightly longer section II (pp. 35-86): "Tibetan (Folk) Songs and Contemporary and Traditional Poetry," understates its content: in addition to sub-section II.1 which "will probably only interest a limited number of scholars and readers, as it contains essays and articles with stereotype odes and lyrics replete with empty political rhetoric, and these papers only interest us for linguistic, lexicographical, and philological reasons" (compiler's note), the other four sub-sections deal with proverbs and maxims; operatic and theatrical m aterial; Gesar epic material and studies; research papers and studies on literary, musicological, linguisticgrammatical, and philological criticism.
