Ohio proposal to change Streamlined Sales Tax compact defeated.

Ohio's attempt to become one of the 13 full-member states of the Streamlined Sales Tax compact took a step backward as an amendment to the agreement proposed by the state was rejected in April by a National Conference of State Legislators' task force. Despite the setback, the measure will still be considered by the full board of implementing states for a final vote.

Ohio's 91 sales tax jurisdictions, each with its own rate, was the catalyst behind the proposal. The goal of the proposed change is to allow flexibility in conforming to rules that, among other things, will eventually require Ohio to charge the sales tax rate based on the destination of the product rather than where it is sold.
