Promoting affordable housing in greater Boston.

Affordability has become a major problem in Boston. The price of a home in many of the towns immediately surrounding Boston is more than six times that of the median household income. These record-high housing costs have priced the lower and middle classes out of Boston neighborhoods. These residents must relocate to faraway suburbs but frequently still commute to jobs in Boston.

As housing costs rise in Boston and residents migrate from the city, the trend toward low-density suburban development has intensified. Developers are responding to the demand for cheaper housing outside the city, building more infrastructure on previously undeveloped lands and placing more pressure on our natural and water resources. In addition, workers must commute greater distances to work in their cars, crowding our roads and polluting our air.
