Defense Against Guardianship Handbook

Maryland Guardianship Pipeline

We continue to work with AARP governmental affairs

on reviewing proposed legislation on guardianship

and elder abuse issues At the suggestion of AARP

we presented a session at the National Guardianship

Association Conference on the Uniform

Guardianship Conservatorship and Protective

Arrangements Act UGCPAA in Orlando Florida in

October 

Our goal was to create a comprehensive idea book

on how to defend an adult against a guardianship

case or to structure and present a case seeking to

modify or terminate a guardianship and restore the

rights of an adult The book took over a year to

research and write This is one of few maybe the

only handbook of its kind Creation of the book

was made possible by generous support from the

Borchard Foundation and FJC The book is now in

stock and ready to ship through the ABA webstore

We completed our second year on this project

working with the Maryland Judiciary on examining

the states healthcare to guardianship pipeline

issues The project is funded by the Administration

for Community Living ACL and has been granted a

third year nocost extension We anticipate

developing tools for the public to use when

working with financial institutions in the period of

the grant We are also working with the project

partners on developing a handbook to be used by

hospital discharge planners when working with

vulnerable individuals
