An unprecedented election by Alaska seafood processors has confirmed support for the continued operation of the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, and resulted in an increase in processor contributions to the agency.

Processors voted to increase the seafood marketing assessment to .5 percent of the value of all the seafood they process in Alaska after Dec. 31, 2004. The rate currently paid by processors is .3 percent. The increase in the processor-paid assessment will offset the loss of revenue from the elimination of the 1 percent salmon marketing tax paid by fishermen.
