A. Probation options and conditions

The sentencing court may stay the judgment and permit the defendant to serve his sentence not in prison, but in the community, either in an unsupervised status or supervised by an agent of the Department of Parole & Probation (DPP). The more onerous of the two probation options is probation after judgment. This means that (1) the defendant pleads guilty or is found guilty; (2) the judge usually sentences the defendant and, if so, suspends the sentence; and (3) the judge places the defendant on probation.
