What high-tech issues await the Colorado Legislature come

"I think the biggest thing you're going to hear about will be the privacy issue," said Tom Moretti, a manager at Microsoft's Englewood office and chair of the Colorado Software Association's (CSA's) Public Policy Committee.

The industry got a scare in the last session when a bill popped up prohibiting Colorado companies doing business on the Internet from collecting or transferring data about consumers, Moretti said. Under the Colorado Internet Privacy Act (HB 1459) companies would have lost their ability to track consumers' use of their websites, he said.

"We don't disagree with privacy. We think privacy is very important, but we want to make sure it doesn't hurt Colorado businesses," Moretti said. A big concern was over a Colorado-limited law driving e-commerce companies to other states.

Sponsors withdrew the bill when CSA agreed to study the matter and recommend solutions. As of press time, its results weren't available. Another broad-based study, created by a bill that did pass (HB 1395), will take two years.
