Though hurricane season officially begins June 1, most often hurricanes hit late August through September. After much publicity following Hurricanes Katrina in 2005, and Ike and Gustav in 2008, businesses should have preparedness and recovery in in their plans, but a few reminders are always in order.

Business property insurer FM Global offers the tips that it says can make the difference between a business detractor and business disaster:

* The risk of flooding frequently accompanies major hurricanes, leaving buildings highly susceptible to severe water damage.

Solution: Assess the flood threat and relocate valuable equipment above ground; fill sandbags and place them around possible entry points to protect vital equipment.

* Windows and doors are vulnerable to debris and need to be protected.
