George Rutherglen is a D istinguished Professor of L aw and the

Earle K. Shawe Professor of Employment L aw at the University of

Virginia. He has written ex tensively on employment discri mination

law, as well as on a variety of subjects related to civil ri ghts and

civil procedure. His prac tice experience also is mainly in the eld of civil

rights litigation. He received hi s bachelor’s degree and his law degr ee from

the University of California at B erkeley. Following law school, he served as

a law c lerk to Judge J. Cliord Wallace of the U.S. Court of Appeals for t he

Ninth Circuit and to Justice William O. Douglas and Justice John Paul Stevens

of the U.S. Supreme Court. Most re cently, he has served as director of the

Graduate Program for Judges at th e University of Virginia Scho ol of Law.
