When Jamie Raskin (Interview, December/January issue) decided to enter politics at the state level in Maryland, he asked me and a few other poets to read poetry at his campaign launch. It was a snowy night in Silver Spring, Maryland, but the event was packed. Raskin spoke emphatically about why he felt drawn to politics, captivating us all.

Though I am not naturally drawn to politicians, I knew Raskin before that night and also knew about his Mar-shall-Brennan work at American University and in Washington, D.C. His winning campaign way back when made him my representative in Takoma Park, Maryland. He was, I proudly can say, my Senator.
