Statistical evidence of Indiana's relatively good economic performance during the recent recession continues to come in.

For one thing, the March adjusted unemployment rate was the ninth-lowest among the 50 states. Indiana's unadjusted jobless rate in April was even lower than the March unadjusted rate, though not by as much as it should have been through typical seasonal factors. Therefore, the seasonally adjusted rate rose in April to 5.8 percent from 5.4 percent in March, still well below the national average.

Other comparisons show the state ranking 15th in the nation in the rate of total payroll employment growth through the 12 months ending in March--up 1.35 percent. Some 18 states still were reflecting decreases in total employment from the year-ago March numbers, and 33 states reported depressed manufacturing employment for the same period.
