According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the plumbing and heating equipment and supplies (hydronics) wholesalers consisted of about 43,663 establishments in 2004, employing approximately 476,219, with an annual payroll of about $18 billion. For the plumbing and heating equipment and supplies (hydronics) wholesalers segment, 62 percent of the 5,511 companies employed less than 100 workers, and for the other building material dealers segment, 66 percent of the 38,152 companies employed less than 20 workers.
The plumbing and heating equipment and supplies (hydronics) wholesalers segment was divided into 25 specialties that were dominated by plumbing and hydronic heating supplies with $25.8 billion in 2006 sales, per Dun & Bradstreet's figures. This was followed by plumbing fittings and supplies with $8.2 billion in sales and heating equipment (hydronic) with $1.7 billion in sales.
The British conglomerate Wolseley plc, the largest distributor of heating and plumbing products worldwide with nearly $20 billion in 2005 sales, once owned two of the top three industry leaders in this category: Ferguson Enterprises Inc. (purchased in 1982 and based in Newport News, Virginia) and Familian Corp. (purchased in 1987 and based in Los Angeles, California). On June 18, 1998, Wolseley announced its integration of Familian into Ferguson into a new, single entity. The merger brought the employee count of the combined company to almost 7,000 and the number of locations to 391 in 41 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. In 2003, Ferguson Enterprises extended its market presence and acquired Triangle Supply, Inc., of Dallas, Texas, and in 2005 posted a U.S. industry-leading $5.9 billion with 22,000 employees.
