Executive Women International (EWI) has appointed Tara Hurley as executive director. Hurley's primary responsibilities at Salt Lake City-based EWI, a national nonprofit professional organization for businesswomen and their firms, will be managing the corporate office, working on membership strategy, and developing partnership programs, as well as expanding the breadth of EWI's professional development programs.

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) granted its highest recognition, the John G. Walsh Award, to longtime University of Utah School of Medicine faculty member F. Marian Bishop, Ph.D., M.S.P.H., chair emerita, and professor of family and preventive medicine. The award is not granted on a regular basis, but only at the discretion of AAFP directors. Presented 20 times since it was established in 1973, Bishop is the first woman to receive the award.

The United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) Advisory Panel on Dietary Supplements has appointed William Popin as chairman. Popin, of Orem, is Director of R&D/Quality at Young Living Essential Oils in Payson. The newly formed USP advisory panel is charged with providing information and recommendations on policy to the Expert Committee on Dietary Supplements-Botanicals.

Dee C. Hansen, P.E., Director of Water and Natural Resources with the national engineering firm of Psomas in its Salt Lake City office, has been appointed by President Bush to chair a three-state water commission created by the Bear River Compact to administer related issues in the states of Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. Hansen was previously executive director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources and worked for the Utah Division of Water Rights in many capacities, including district engineer, state engineer and director.

Cognetix, Inc. has appointed Thomas B. King as president, chief executive officer and director. King, a 25-year industry veteran, previously held the same positions with Anesta Corp. prior to its acquisition by Cephalon, Inc. Cognetix works to develop small peptide therapeutics from the venoms of Conus marine snails. The primary therapeutic focus of the company is on epilepsy and pain.

The Utah State Bar presented the Edward Clyde Distinguished Service Award to Michael M. Quealy, a water and natural resource attorney with Parsons Behle & Latimer.
