Grants alert (cont.)
Eligibility: Colleges and universities and nonprot
organizations.
Areas: NSF said the overarching purpose of HDR
Central will be to increase the impact of the HDR Big
Idea by supporting coordination and communication
among all HDR projects, and by sharing HDR efforts
and outcomes with the public.

Improving Undergraduate STEM Education:
Hispanic-Serving Institutions (NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation seeks
applications for the Improving Undergraduate STEM
Education: Hispanic-Serving Institutions announcement
for Track 1—Planning or Pilot Projects (PPP) and
Track 2—Implementation and Evaluation Projects
(IEP) to enhance the quality of undergraduate science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
education and to increase the recruitment, retention
and graduation rates of students pursuing associate or
baccalaureate degrees in STEM.
Deadline: Jan. 13, 2021.
Funds: Fifteen to 25 PPP awards for two-year-long
projects and up to 10 IEP awards for three- to ve-year-
long projects. Awards range from $200,000 to $800,000.
Eligibility: Nonprot organizations.
Areas: NSF said the PPP track seeks to enhance
undergraduate STEM education and build capacity
at less-resourced institutions and to increase these
institutions’ ability to compete for NSF funding from other
programs. The IEP track seeks to design and implement
a new educational practice or practices, and/or adapt/
replicate evidence-based practices that are already
known to be effective.

International Research Experiences for Students
(NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation seeks
applications for the International Research Experiences
for Students (IRES) announcement to support
international research and research-related activities for
U.S. science and engineering students.
Deadline: Nov. 12, 2020.
Funds: $10 million for up to 32 awards.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities and nonprot
organizations.
Areas: NSF said Track I: IRES Sites projects engage
a group of undergraduate and/or graduate students in
active high-quality collaborative research, in principle at
an international site with mentorship from researchers
at a host lab, and Track II: Advanced Studies Institutes
(ASIs) projects are intensive short courses with related
activities that engage advanced graduate students
in active learning and research at the frontiers of
knowledge. ASIs typically range in length from 10 to 21
days and, in principle, must be held outside the United
States.

Plasma Physics (NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation seeks
applications for the Plasma Physics announcement
to generate an understanding of the fundamental
principles governing the physical behavior of a plasma
via collective interactions of large ensembles of free
charged particles, as well as to improve the basic
understanding of the plasma state as needed for other
areas of science and engineering.
Deadline: Nov. 16, 2020.
Funds: Awards vary by project scope and may be up to
three years in length.
Eligibility: Unrestricted.
Areas: NSF said funding supports research that can be
categorized by several broad, sometimes overlapping
subareas of the discipline, including: magnetized
plasmas in the laboratory, space and astrophysical
environments; high-energy-density plasmas; low-
temperature plasmas; dusty, ultra-cold and otherwise
strongly coupled plasmas; non-neutral plasmas; and
intense eld-matter interaction in plasmas.

CISE Research Initiation Initiative (NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation seeks
applications for the Computer and Information Science
and Engineering Research Initiation Initiative (CRII)
announcement to support research independence
among early-career academicians who specically lack
access to adequate organizational or other resources.
Deadline: Nov. 2, 2020, and Sept. 20, 2021.
Funds: $10 million total for up to 60 awards.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities and nonprot
organizations.
Areas: NSF said CRII awards will be given to
researchers to undertake exploratory investigations,
acquire and test preliminary data, develop collaborations
within or across research disciplines and/or develop new
algorithms, approaches and system designs/prototypes,
which together or separately may lead to improved
capacity to write successful proposals submitted to other
programs in the future.
