In her 1994 Ph.D. dissertation at the Universite Laval, Marcelle Saindon followed in the footsteps of her mentor, Andre Couture, who is known for several Harivamsa studies, including L'Enfance de Krsna: Traduction des chapitres 30 a 78 (ed. cr.) (1991). The Pitrkalpa (hence, PK) corresponds to chapters 11 to 19 of P. L. Vaidya's critical edition of the Harivamsa, placed between the descriptions of the solar and lunar dynasties. Although edited and translated more than once as part of the Harivamsa, the PK itself has received little scholarly attention. One reason for this neglect, according to the author, is that one looked at this section of the Harivamsa as a text on sraddha; indeed, as a sraddhakalpa, it is "decevant, supportant mal la comparaison avec d'autres sraddhakalpa, en raison du maigre bagage d'informations relatives aux normes rituelles et aux descriptions des sraddha qu'il peut fournir" (p.5; cf. p. 13). In reality the Harivamsa passage is intended as a pitrkalpa, "qui porte sur le culte des Pi tr, les ancetres pour qui les rites postfuneraires, les sraddha, ont ete fidelement et correctement accomplis par les fils et qui ont pu ainsi acceder au statut de Pitr" (p. 2).

The volume is divided into two parts. The goal of the first part, "Etude du Pitrkalpa du Harivamsa" (pp. 1-171), is clearly formulated in Couture's preface: "On a pu croire jusqu'ici que ce Pitrkalpa n'etait qu'une accumulation desordonnee de fragments concernant le culte des ancetres. Le texte qui a ete ici traduit, commente et annote apparait desormais comme une ceuvre urganisee et novatrice" (p. vii). Indeed, the single study of the PK so far is J. D. L. de Vries's Der Sraddhakalpa im Harivamsa und in funf anderen Puranen (1928), part of a Ph.D. dissertation written under the supervision of Willibald Kirfel, who, one year earlier, had published his classic Das Purana Pancalaksana: Versuch einer Textgeschichte. De Vries adopted Kirfel's approach, namely, "la mise en rapport des contenus des purana afin de les faire seclairer mutuellement, et il fait l'hypothese que tous ces passages proviennent d'une source commune qu'une etude comparative permettrait de restituer" (pp. 73-74). As a result, "de Vries ne se preoccupe pas du sens global du texte dans lequel il percoit un ecrit heteroclite plutot qu'un ensemble signifiant" (p. 74).
