Pioneer Hall wins engineering award.

The University of Minnesota's Pioneer Hall was the "Grand Award" winner at the American Council of Engineering Companies of Minnesota's 53rdEngineering Excellence Awards banquet.

St. Paul-based TKDA, with KWK Architects of St. Louis, provided engineering and architecture services for the $104.5 million renovation and expansion project.

The project turned the 90-year-old Georgian Revival residence hall into 18 "vibrant student communities while preserving a significant amount of the historic building's exterior," according to TKDA.

McGough Construction was the construction manager at risk for the project, which increased the building's capacity from 693 beds on four floors to 756 beds on five floors. The building's size grew by 40%.
