Willem B(oudewijn) Boll[ddot{a}]g e earned the Ph.D. degree, in the Caland-Gonda tradition, at the University of Utrecht, with a thesis Sadvim[ddot{s}]a-br[bar{a}]hmana: Introduction, Translation, Extracts from the Commentary and Notes (Utrecht: Drukkerij A. Storm, 1956). Fourteen years later he wrote on Buddhism, first the Kun[bar{a}]laj[bar{a}]taka: Being an Edition and Translation (London: Luzac, 1970), "a sample, or perhaps the beginning, of a new European critical edition of the J[bar{a}]takas, after Fausb[ddot{o}]ll's "(p.v); his interest in Buddhist literature continued with The P[bar{a}]das of the Suttanip[bar{a}]ta (Reinbek, 1980) and the Reverse index of the Dhammapada, Suttanip[bar{a}]ta, Thera- and Ther[bar{i}]g[bar{a}]th[bar{a}] P[bar{a}]das (Reinbek, 1983). Meanwhile Boll[acute{e}]e also worked on Jainism, first with Studien zum S[bar{u}]yagada, 2 vols. (Wiesbaden: Steiner, 1977, 1988), "ein erster Versuch..., einige durch die Charakterisierung verschiedener Weltanschauungen thematisch verbund ene St[ddot{u}]cke eines Textes aus dem Kanon der [acute{S}]vet[hat{a}]mbar Jains herauszugeben" (vol. 1, p. vii); and, more recently, in rapid succession, with the three volumes under review.
